SGBV: NGO sensitise students, urge victims to speak up

Women’s Right and Health Project (WRAHP) a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) said it had just concluded a sensitisation programme against Social and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) in secondary School.

Miss Eniola Ibukunoluwa, Case Management Officer, WRAPH, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday that the sensitisation programme was targeted at senior secondary school students.

Ibukunoluwa explained the programme was a two-day workshop on increasing access to protection from sexual and gender Based violence among senior secondary school students in Alimosho Local Government Area.

She said that the students needed to know their rights and what the law says.

“The difference between gender and sex as gender has to do with cultural norms while sex is constant.

“The social role which some people believe that women cannot take.

“To educate them to know more and relearn what they previously known on SGBV,” she said.

The case management officer said that it was time to change the narratives that female child could not occupy certain position.

She emphasised the students needed to know that there was nothing like the male being superior to the female folks.

According to her, any woman can occupy any position.

“It is time the male students see the female students as colleagues and not as inferior folks” she said.

Ibukunoluwa said that the sensitisation programme had been a success based on the feedback they got from the students.

She, therefore, expressed optimism that some of the norms would change as the sensitisation programme had been a change agent.
